Crank pedal thread sizing?
I have a 70's Gitane midget and I was wondering if there is some weird "french" pedal threading on these? They won't fit modern SPD pedals even though the spindle flats take the same size (or so I recall) pedal wrench. Seems like they're only a little off. Can I retap these to take modern pedals? Or should I just get a new spindle and lose the cottered cranks altogether? Fortunately these have a normal 68mm BB.

Old french bikes have 14mm pedal threads. Any decent bicycle shop can tap them for you. Very little material is removed.
The taps required are bicycle specific and not cheap. I think I paid $30 for mine.

The pedal taps you need is 9/16 inch and there is a left side and a ride side tap, so don't use the wrong ones.

The thread is 9/16 X 20, not the 9/16 X 18 you'll find in your Sears tap and die set. Plus, you'll need both right and left threaded. Bike Shops have them for chasing threads, not because they tap out a lot of French cranks.
Mine are made by Park. It was worth it for me to buy them because I love French bikes, but I'm not particularly fond of French pedals.
