Favorite Apron and Why?

I've been working in a shop for a couple years now. I never wear an apron because I don't like the ones that have the strap that goes from front up around the back of the neck and then back down to the front, that's all my shop orders. I'm thinking I'll like the kind that cross behind the back better. Anyway, I guess that park tool is the most popular apron but just wanted to see what else you guys like and why. Thanks

Finish Line... crosses in the back and I prefer this for the same reason you do.

I am strictly a home mechanic. I have two aprons. The Park Tool Heavy duty shop apron and a weber red barbecue apron. I use both of them, but the weber is quick to grab and fit, thus I tend to use it more when maintaining my bikes.

We're down to discussing aprons now? What's next shop rags, rented vs bought?

It's an apron, neither Park nor Finish Line make them. They just screen their names on stock aprons. Go to a commercial uniform & work clothing supplier and select the apron of your choice from among their offerings.

A nice apron is the mark of a quality mechanic! The more unique the logo on the front the more experienced the mechanic must be.

+1! And not TOO clean!

The HD Park one (or similar that cross over your shoulders as opposed to hanging from your neck) is the only one you would want to wear all day (especially if you like to have tools at your fingertips). I have several of the "hangers" and grab them for short jobs.

And what's wrong with talkin' about RAGS? I regularly wash and re-use mine with great results. The old guys down at one of the LBS laugh at me - they never seem to use rags (but then, they also use electrical tape to suture major wounds!!

Well now that you mention it, I *have* been having trouble finding decent shop rags now that I've used up all my old t-shirts. Those red ones you get at auto parts stores are atrocious.

Or shop uses the rag laundry service. It's good because the rags are so well worn that they're not all linty.

Well since we've moved there already.

What's killed the rag tradeis changes in the clothing world. Used to be most cheap clothing was 100% cotton so there were always good rags. Now most clothing is polyester, or poly-cotton and not only is it lousy to wear, but when it becomes rags, it won't absorb water oil worth a damm.

When I had the machine shop running full time, I used to get 100% cotton rags from a rag dealer. Eventually things got so bad that the only way he could maintain a supply of 100% cotton "rags", was to have them made. (kinda defeats the purpose)

John,

I don't know why, but I always pictured you as much taller.
