Derailleur cable too short??

I noticed my rear derailleur cable was getting ratty, so I went to replace it and voila! A brand new out of the bag (old stock, actually. I bought it from Nashbar in 1987) was about 2 cm too short. What gives?

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

What kind of bike?

1987 would have been in the down tube shifter era. Shifter cables didn't need to be as long as we commonly use today.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

It's a matter of outlook. Some might say you're housings are too long.

Then reality is that the "standard" gear wires sold today are longer than the standard wires of times past. Before controls were moved to the bars, cables only had to be long enough to reach reach D/T levers, or maybe stem shifters.
