Upgrading from Octalink to...bb30? Suggestions, answers please.
I have this bike: https://2009.feltracing.com/09-catalo...es/09-z80.aspx
It's heavily upgraded, but since I'm not a mechanic, the upgrades so far are non-mechanical things. Handlebar, stem, cables, wheels, fork.
Next I want to upgrade the groupset to a 2x10 system. I am a complete novice on this. Shifters/gears/derailleur, I get it, they just have to all be 2x10 compatible. But crankset/bracket, I am clueless on.
I know enough to know the bottom bracket has to be able to fit in the frame and the crankset has to fit the bottom bracket.
What are my options here? Say I want to get an FSA SL-K BB30 crankset. Is this possible? If not, then what is possible as far as upgrading the crank?

Not possible to put a BB30 in that frame. You can install any crank that uses a threaded bb. Basically ANY Shimano crank, any SRAM GXP crank, and pretty much any Campy crank. That should give you some options to look at...anything english threaded.

So Shimano is "ISIS" - and any ISIS bottom bracket I can put in there, regardless of the size?
-How did you know that I can't put a BB30 in there?
-Do I need a new BB with a new crankset or can I use the one I already have?
This says it's english. Would I be able to fit this in there? https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-FSA-SL-K...item53fb89b283

If you have an English threaded bottom bracket, the threaded opening in the Shell is a little under 35 mm wide. BB30 bearings are 42 mm wide and are pressed into a non-threaded shell. They simply won't fit. To use BB30 cranks, you need a frame with a BB30 bottom bracket shell.
If your existing bottom bracket is Octalink and you want to keep using it, you would need Octalink cranks, but you'd want to confirm whether your bottom bracket is Octalink V1 or V2 and you'd want to confirm the spindle length matches your crankset's requirements.
As for the cranks you linked on eBay, they're MegaExo, which is designed for traditional threaded bottom brackets. This particular set is English threaded, so they'd fit on your bike, but you'll want to make sure the crankarm length is correct. If your bike is on the smaller side, 175mm would be pretty big.

I know about 500% more than I knew about bottom brackets a few hrs ago.
You mentioned the spindle length. My bike has a "Shimano 68mm x 121mm Octalink Splined" bracket.
Wondering how negotiable this spindle length is. I've got a 121mm spindle, and to switch over to a double, my new crankset needs a bottom bracket w/exactly a 121mm spindle? When I look them up the spindle lengths are all over the map.
Crank arm length I'm good. I'm at 170mm and will stick w/that. I'm short and that was for example only.

Exactly which crankset do you have? If it is not a Shimano using the same version of Octalink, then it won't work with the existing bottom bracket. If it is the FSA that you linked to earlier, I think you will be in the market for a matching bb to go with it. It might make sense to source them from the same place, so you can get properly matched components.

New bike.. frame and all ..
Only buying an external BB to thread in, and new crankset , is possible with a threaded BB shell, on your frame...
now the Rt crank has a pipe attached to it that is the BB spindle.
ISIS and Octalink were fixed sets , had to use the cranks and the BB with it as a trio, 2 arms + BB.
3rd parties could make ISIS stuff without paying Shimano a Patent licence fee..

Hope it's ok to pile on this thread. I'm planning on almost the same thing on an '07 Felt Z70. Replacing the FSA Gossamer triple with a Shimano 6700 compact double. From what I've read, I'm assuming the 6700 external cup bottom bracket will fit my frame, but wanted to check to be sure.
Are there any other clearances, sizes or widths I need to worry about besides crank arm length?
