front hub servicing: late 90's Selle Italia

the front hub of my Selle Italia wheel set needs servicing. the hubs are from ~'97-99. the wheels are new (to me) and i haven't serviced them before. when i popped off the dust caps, this is what i found:

on one side there is nothing, no slots for a wrench, no notches, no nuts. on the other side there is a recessed nut that i think i could access, but i have nothing to grab on the other side to use for leverage. does anyone have any experience with something like this? thanks!

Without actually seeing the hub this is only a guess but some hubs disassemble by sticking 5 mm Allen keys into both axle ends and using them to unthread one of the axle end caps.

Don't know the hub, but seeing a hex nut under one end cap, I suspect the end cap slips on and off, possible retained by an internal spring clip. Try fitting an open end wrench under the flange and gently levering it up to see if it'll move out and off. If so, then the nut is next, while holding the axle in an axle vice.

If the end cap doesn't lift off, you're on your own.

Many of these ultralight hubs are like Chinese puzzle boxes, you have to figure out the sequence they were assembled out, then work it backward.

I think I can see a 5mm allen socket in the endcap in the first pic; you can probably get it undone if you insert a flat screwdriver next to the hex nut and twist it to stop the axle rotating.

it either pulls off or threads off. sometimes it is hard to tell due to dirt making it harder to pull the end caps off. the dirt doesn't help when trying to find wrench flats or hex broaches

thanks for the help guys. there was actually a little "C" lock ring that i popped off and the end piece slid off, giving me access to the nut. i did have to hold it fairly tight in an axle vice but was able to get the nut loose with no damage.

now i have the axle out, but the craziest thing is that it looks like i'm going to have to dismantle the entire wheel to access the bearings! they are sealed bearings which appear to be blocked by the spoke heads i'm going to run it by a shop today to get a 2nd opinion before i dive into this. at least i only paid $40 for the wheel set.

& I thought they just made Saddles.

Service other than popping off the seal and coping with the bearing cartridge itself , cleaning and re greasing,
may make just getting a new pair of Cartridge bearings them selves simpler.

Bearing number stated in the seal?
