Shift cable housing won't fit back into the cable stop

I repaired a flat on my wife's hybrid (the only mechanical thing I'm good at), but when I put the wheel back on the bike, I noticed the shifter cable had come out of the cable stop on the frame. Now, I can't get it back in -- the cable housing goes past the cable stop, and I can't pull the cable far enough to make the cable housing fit in the stop. What can I do?

Release the tension on the cable, by changing the gears so there is no tension (which way depends on your gearing, rapid rise / normal) and re-insert the cable in to the stop.

+1,

Lift the rear wheel and pedal, shifting to low by pushing the RD in at the bottom. Then set the bike down. Shift the lever to high while pulling the wire, make sure all the housing is seated at all the other ends, and you should have enough slack to re-pocket the section you're fighting with. If you need a bit more slack push the RD in to get it.
