2013 Sora Shifting Problem
2013 Sora 9 speed rear derailleur, cassette and shifters. No matter what I do, when shifting it continues to jump over one of the cassette cogs (4th one down). What the heck am I missing? Everything looks nicely aligned without the chain on, but once the chain is on, it does the "skip a cog" thing. Yes, the chain is a 9 speed chain and the derailleur hanger is straight. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Far and away, the #1 cause of RD over travel (ALL RDs, ALL brands) is incorrect cable routing to the inside (closer to pivot) of the pinch bolt. Some RDs also have a "bumper" or other obstacle outside of the pivot. On these the cable is almost always routed to the outside of the bumper and back to the bolt.
There may be exceptions (but I can't think of any, offhand) but cables are generally routed as close to the end of the arm as possible.
So take a look at your cable routing, correct it if needed, and post anew for more advice.

When did it change - is this a new derailleur, did you do some maintenance, have an accident? It's important for us to know what happened just before the problem began.

Sorry for being a dope and not providing sufficient background: everything is brand new, never ridden, never crashed - the only thing used is the frame that is being built up. I will check the cable routing as FBinNY suggests and report back.

In the immortal words of Chris Farley, "God! I'm an idiot!" Yes, I routed the cable on the wrong side of the pinch bolt and now that it is where it should be be, all is clicking away fine. FBinNY, if you ever find yourself in the Black Hills of SD, I owe you a cold, locally brewed beer (or other beverage of your choice).
