Move Fork Lockout Switch Position on Handlebar?

Hello. I want to swap the position of the bell and fork lockout on my Giant Roam XR1. The reason is that I think it makes sense to have the bell readily available without lifting my hand from the grips - I use the bell way more than I trigger the lockout.

Photo:

Questions:

1. Is it just a matter of loosening the hex screw holding the lockout switch, sliding it down, and re-tightening the screw? (i.e. I won't create some cable tension problem or something?)

2. The little hex screw that holds the lockout switch in place is RIGHT below the cable connection, so you can't stick a screwdriver or hex key straight in. There's very little clearance. Does this mean I have to remove the cable in order to access the screw? Or is it just a matter of having a low enough profile hex key to access it?

3. Do you think my overall idea behind making this switch is smart?

Thanks for any responses.

Because the lever on the bell operates in a manner that seems to be intended for the left hand.

Right index finger in front of the bar rather than left thumb behind it?

Yes.

Bend the cable backwards and with a little bit of fiddling and/or force you should be able to get an ordinary hex key in there. I have repositioned mine several times.

I would put the bell on the right side. I like the lockout close to my left hand.

The idea of moving the bell over to the Right Hand Side but inverting it seems to be the most sensible. Thanks everyone for your feedback, especially for the detailed info and photos from ragnar.jensen.

Hi,

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cateye-35279.../dp/B001CR6O6O

I presume this is your bell and as a "ping" type it simply won't work upside down. However
I'm pretty sure you can rotate the "ping" to wherever you want, for right or left mounting,
and the bell can be mounted behind or in front of the handlebars, whatever suits you best.

rgds, sreten.

I've had bad luck with this one on a MTB as it pinged constantly on gravel roads and trails. Maybe it works fine on the road.

My bell of choice for flat bars is this one, on the right, upside down, operated with my thumb like a trigger: https://www.mirrycle.com/brass_duet.php

(May want to mute your computer before going to either link.)

It is not a difficult matter to grind off part of the short arm of a hex key to allow it to fit better. It's perfectly OK to modify tools to suit your needs, especially a $0.20 hex key.

The bell I have is not a "ping" type. It's a CatEye PB-600.
I've since moved it over to the right hand side and it works fine. Haven't done a test ride yet.
