What are Washers For?

I was noticing that some water bottle bolts that I have have washers on them. The washers are about the same diameter as the head of the bolt, and are pretty permanent (that is, they can't be removed). I realize I've never been sure about what washers are used for.

My understanding has been that washers are either for (1) distributing the load of the head of the bolt, or (2) avoiding galvanic corrosion.

Are there any other reasons to have washers on a bolt?

Assuming the are free to spin, it would (hopefully) keep the head of the bolt from digging into the part when being tightened.
Might be beneficial on non metal parts.

Al,

Here's some reading on washers that should answer the question .

BTW- you might want to bookmark "the Straight Dope". It's a handy source for all kinds of unimportant information. It's not always authoritative, but can be a good place to start.

Washers are to sprevent a second blackhole in the universe from forming... or was it to keep the space time condominium from tearing a hole in the cats farts? In any case, they are important, and MUST be used!!!
