Will bicycle trainers work with a solid axle like on a single speed or do they need wheels equipped with skewers only?

Typically they clamp the end of the QR,caps, why would they not fit over nuts? maybe fund some nice Acorn Nuts..

FYI - some trainers may need an adapter, or sometimes doubling up on rear axle nuts because the the rear end in narrower, and the mounting system can't close enough.
