Where to find Technical Specifications for major groupsets?

Hey there

I was wondering where I could find the mechanical differences between X groupset produced by manufacturer Y? For example, the difference between rear derailleur A and rear derailleur B is that B is made of a different material, and the difference between RD A and RD C is that C works (or applies force, or has doohickey A vs thingy-ma-bob B, or however you wish to call it) in a different manner.

If I go to Major Manufacturer Y's website all I can find are advertisements telling me how great their product and that it uses [Insert Techno-Buzz word here] to deliver increased performance, stiffness and weight reduction! Oh my! I don't want the subjective "OVER-TORQUE SUPER CARBON 5000 beats all competitors!" I want the objective schematics and engineering of the part, ideally including things such as: method of operation, detailed schematics, materials list, weight, MSRP, development/release dates, diagrams, graphs, mechanical stress-failure points, etc.

Does this get published? Do we actually know how each piece works? Or are we just getting whatever the marketing department throws out and the only way to learn more would be to buy each component and strip it down?

This isn't to say the subjective doesn't have its place. When well-written and sourced from an independent authority (as opposed to the PR department) reviews are useful and needed, if you have a good reviews resource please share it.

Manufacturers are reluctant to reveal many facts bout their products. The exact materials, production methods, tolerances held, testing done would let other companies catch up faster then the corporate world would want. Having said that, many functional statements are available from the technical docs that some companies publish. It is these functional specs that bike builders need to design and outfit their models.

The commercial world is not an open source one. Andy.
