cartridge bottom bracket noise
can a cartridge bottom bracket make noise if it's loose? i know this is a kinda dumb question but my wife's bike is making a clanking noise, i've checked the cranks and they're tight. the noise is mostly when she's standing.
will a cartridge bb sometimes need snugging up?

A cartridge type bb if loose will tend to creak in aluminum frames. If it's clanking and you've ruled out the pedals, it may be worn out.
Manufacturer's will save money when they spec their bikes. Bottom brackets are notorius for being "super cheap" generic items. They are not seen and new work fine. Unfortunately, the design tolerances are crap and they wear out quickly!
Check out other things as noises tend to transmit through the frame. Check the seat post binder bolt. Check your headset. Check you water bottle cages.

I'd remove the bottom bracket, clean & grease the threads on the the bb & inside the bb shell & reinstall. Only takes a few minutes & if the noise is still there, you can at least remove that from the list of possible causes.

After I picked up a new bike a few years ago, it made a maddening noise that was finally tracked down to the bottom bracket. The LBS mechanic tightened the cr*p out of it and it stopped creaking. However, this cycle repeated a few times (enough that I bought the necessary tool) then it mysteriously stopped loosening itself - knock on wood. ;-)
