need a quill stem to convert a vintage mtb to drop bars

My next project is to convert a 1989 specialized team stumpjumper to drop bars. I have most of the parts for the build but I need a pretty tall stem to make this work. A nitto technomic would do the trick but I prefer a black stem (it's a mainly white bike and the wheels and the seatpost are black). I need a one inch quill stem but it can be either 25.4 or 26. I know Kalloy makes a dirt drop quill stem but I can't find one longer than 100mm and I need one 120 mm long.

I know the nitto is a beautiful stem and it comes in sizes but are there any other good quality black quill dirt drop type stems out there other than the Kalloy dirt drop? The bike is a good size for me at 20 inches so the stem doesn't need to be too crazy tall to work but I do want it higher than my current stem:

I have a couple with the length but not quit the rise you need but I wiil keep an look out next time Im at the bike coop. I'm assuming your looking for 120mm length with an effective to the bars rise of about 2-3inches.

When I converted my Diamondback to drop bars, I wanted a little more reach as well. My solution was to buy drop bars with the most reach possible -- VO Rando bars. That way, I had a stretched-out-and-down position, as well as an upright-and-close position. Love 'em:

Here's a comparison shot between a set of Sakae Randonneur bars and the VOs:

Note that if you switch to a Nitto Technomic or another "road" type stem, you'll need to add a cable hanger.

Yes good idea a nice set of large forward set rando touring bars could do the trick on this setup.

On today's market, I would say the easiest option to do is getting a 22.2 to 28.6mm threaded to threadless converter and going with the stem / handlebar you want.

This. I just did this ( for the second time) building up an old Cannondale R800. It works nicely, and you have your pick of stems/bars.

+2. I did this on my '96 Litespeed with it's 1" threaded fork and headset to let me use newer (31.8 mm) bars since I had to go to a threadless stem too.

Visit your LBS and have them order you a stem from J&B. Their house brand Origin8 has a couple of different stems with long quills for ~$25-30.

Go with a stem adapter. You might buy a quill stem and find you didn't get the right length. Threadless stems are easy to find, cheap, and you may already have the right one.

Black threadless stems are very common. If you want all-black you can paint the adapter. Since it doesn't see much contact with anything the paint should remain in good condition for a long time.

The Steel Tube stem risers are already Black and 7/8 OD bottom and 1" on top, [7/8" ID]
(oversize threaded forks were 1" ID, and so the stem riser for those will already be 9/8" OD on the top.)

so a shim around the upper section,, and a 9/8" stem on top of It. ..

Just did that on a bike last week .. You just plug the stem riser so it wont fill with Rain.

With the cantilever brakes, you need some kind of cable stop. On your current flat-bar setup, that is built into the stem. You have two options here:
(A) find a 1" quill stem with a cable stop (for centerpull or cantilever brakes), but pretty much only in 25.4mm clamp diameter. You can find road bars with 25.4mm clamp diameter, particularly the Nitto B115.
Note that 25.4mm stems with a single-bolt clamp designed for flat bars, might have too wide of a clamp area to get curved drop bars through.
(B) install a cable hanger that attaches into the headset as a spacer

Option (B) will give you more flexibility in getting the look of the stem that you want.

If you want a black stem, I would recommend that you look at Salsa cro-moly road quill stems. You can find them new or used in 26.0mm clamp diameter. I have them on two of my bikes. The newer one (on the red bike) has a removable faceplace. Just make sure you don't get a stem from the batch that was recalled some years ago.

edit: both of the road bikes pictured are using Ritchey ergo-bend drop bars with 26.0mm-clamp diameter. Shot-peened black finish, although I doubt you're worried about the color of the bar itself.

Subscribed to thread. Thanks for starting this discussion. I'm in the exact same situation with a MTB with that same stem (as far as I can tell) and I've been looking for the same stuff:

Dirt drop stem in black, and a way to route the front brake cable.

Thanks all.
