After staring at the pictures more I think if it's not the hanger that's bent it's the derailleur itself that's bent.

I know I have limits. But I just like to try to learn what I can before I offload what I should be able do myself.
Thanks all for your patience and help

That is a "braze-on" type derailleur. In some pictures it's at the bottom of the slot, in others it is at or near the top of the slot. A picture shot from the right side of the FD might help us analyze the problem better.

those are two different derailleurs.
one (the first, better aligned one) is the original 6600
the second set is the 6500 I was trying to swap on to see if it was the derailleur.
But that 6500 alignment is waaaay off.
that's actually what I was trying to ask in the 2nd thread (that got merged in here 'cause it stemmed from the same bike, same setup problems) - why different FDs would not seem to be compatible with this tabbed frame.
I still don't know what the deal is there.

No, absolutely. I am headed to Biseagal tomorrow and I'll drag this along.

I don't know much about "newer" hollowtechs as I work on old square taper rigs. Could it be possible that the bearing has been replaced with a wider axle version? Pushing the chainrings out of reach? Some of the old axles were longer on one side then the other and could be installed backwards. Fun times.

Peter, You may have to drag out a file to create a little more outward FD travel. Make sure that the cable is routed to the correct side of the cinching bolt and you may even want to try the B side of the cinching bolt before filing (based on your remark that you have to force the shifter to complete the shift).
Brad
PS Worst case scenario is attempting to mate the two Hollowtech versions together which would prevent the crank set from fully seating onto the BB.

and the Winner Is.....(bad BB install)
sorry to be so late on the followup here. I got distracted.
in any event, I gave up and took the bike to Malcolm at the Biseagal bike shop here (though, "shop" is not the right word. Biseagal more like a mini-factory as he has all the gear to build from raw tubes)
Anyway, Malcolm figured out in short order that the hollowtech BB was not correctly installed. Apparently it slid to the Right when you actually rode the machine.
That explained why the FD setup could work perfectly on the stand but fail in a road test.
Maybe I could have / should have noticed that myself. Seems obvious in retrospect. But I hadn't noticed any play.
Lessons are:
1) be sure to consider related bits when diagnosing a problem (and some of you did try to push me in that direction with the idea that the chain line might be out and so the spindle might be misaligned. But I foolishly dismissed that when I figured that Hollowtech could not be shifted.)
2) time is money and a few bucks for a pro is better than hours spent by an amateur.
Thanks
Peter
