Actually maybe I'm missing something but I've had issues (rubbing) running fat chains through a 9sp RD, so I'd say the LBS is right. Of course, the obvious solution is to run a good 9sp chain (I have a stack of 6500/XT chains which can be had very cheap around here)...

Oh and I do the same thing with this kind of behavior above as in real life, I ignore the provocations... It did take me a bit of practice and you have to be prepared (physically) to handle a possible aggressive reaction... And of course having more interesting stuff to worry about helps

Yeah, this is why I hesitated on saying that it would work. The indexing will work fine, but the chain might not play nice. 9 speed chains only cost $5 more than a 6/7/8 but he wants to use his NOS 6 speed chain. I know FDs in particular don't play nice with different width chains.

Geeez, austex, your comment to Jake was quite rude and unwarranted. Jake was just saying that by leaving out an important bit of info that you already had in your post, lead to a bunch of dumb guessing. If you had posted that the LBS said that they didn't think the 9 speed derailleur would work because of the width of the chain, then we could have explained to you right off that it would work. Holding out that info is just dumb. Would you bring your car to the mechanic and say "Can you fix the problem?" and not tell them the details of your problem? Of course not, you would give all the info you possibly had so that the mechanic could make an informed repair/diagnosis. \

You were just trolling by purposely leaving out that info. Why did you think that was a good idea?

Because the OP is a jerktroll who shouldn't get further help from this forum, unless he apologizes.
