HELP! Ultegra Road Brake install woes
Ordered me a set of ultegra brakes to upgrade the no-names that came on my allez. First challenge was that the recess nut barely reached even when using the thinner of the 2 supplied washers. I went ahead and used the one from the old brake, which will thread on about 8 turns until tight, seems well secure.
My problem is in the cabling. Of course the cables are already in place, but the brake end of the casing is finished with a black metal "cable end" (for lack of a better word). Which doesn't really fit into the cup in the caliper arm. I used the leverage of the brake handle to make it go in, but then it's in so tight that I can't use the rotary adjustment. It doesn't look like I can take the casing end piece off (at least not likely without buggering up the cable). It does look, however, like there may be a little sleeve inside the casing cup on the caliper. Will this come out? It does look like it's got a notch in it, but I'd rather not screw that up as well if it's not intended to come out.
Any ideas? I could take it to my lbs tomorrow - admit I was trying to save the bux, and pay for them to finish my install, but it WOULD be embarrasing. Either way, gotta move fast - need to be back in bidness before the weekend.....
Thanks...

Let's see. Housing costs a dollar a foot. Your brakes probably cost you a bit more than that. I suggest you not attempt to modify your perfectly good ultegra brakes.
Take a deep breath, stare at the housing which apparently currently has a cable running through it and ponder how one might remove said endcap without damaging the cable. Perhaps removing the cable from the housing would allow you to get a set of plyers on the endcap and yank it off without harming the cable.
As to the way you used the brake lever to force the housing into the caliper; Next time you are tempted to use a lever to force something that seems resistent, put down the tools and step away from the bike. Think about it for awhile before you cost yourself a lot of money by breaking something.

Words to live by Slider - I wasn't able to get the ferrule off as it seemed crimped on - so I decided to do what perhaps I should have in the first place - take it to my friendly LBS. They had it taken care of this afternoon - and I don't mind sending a few bucks their way - keeps them available.
BTW - I believe he did just nip the housings off below the ferrule - and my new barrel adjusters accept just the cable housing itself.
