Loctite 222 vs. Loctite 242
I have to remove and re-install the crank arm in my Colnago C59. I have a Campy Record 11 speed crank set (Ultra-Torque).
The Campy official page recommends using Loctite 222 on the fixing bolt. I have a small bottle of Loctite 242. Can these be used interchangeably? My instinct is to stick with the Campy recommendations for Loctite 222....but if I can use 242 then it will save me a trip to the store. Thanks in advanced. PS: I should add that I cannot find Loctite 222 in the Loctite website and I was wondering if 242 replaced 222. |
IIRC 222 is a lower strength version then 242. I've never tried but i supose you could mix a little oil with your 242. Really i'd get the 222. Andy.

You should be able to find it at an aftermarket automotive store. The 242 seems really weak to me, I've never tried the purple. |
222 is removable with hand tools on 1/4" and smaller fasteners, 242 is hand tool removable on 1/4" to 3/4". If your fastener is 1/4" you are good with either.

I use 222, 242, and 271 regularly.
IME, the major difference between 222 and 242 is the breaking point. 222 has almost no breaking strength. You just feel tight or cross-threaded bolt feel from start to finish. On the other hand, 242 has the "pop" when the compound releases the bolt. I use 222 on UT crank installation because I like using the right stuff when I'm working on other people's bikes. |
Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. This is a great place to get information.
I decided to go with Campy's recommendations for Loctite 222. I just ordered some from Amazon and it will be in by tomorrow. once again, thank you. :thumb: |

+1 I tend to follow manufacturer's recommendations absent a good reason for doing differently; I figure that they may possibly know a little more about their product than I do. |
