NiteRider battery finally dies
 

Well, it finally kicked the bucket, my NiteRider battery won't take a charge anymore. I've had it since 1997 and the last few times I used it I noticed it wasn't lasting as long. So what to do now?

Are their better batteries now that will work with my old light, cable and charger? How do I dispose of the old one? Thanks!

The batteries in Niterider systems of late 90's vintage are ususally common nicads or lead acids. It's possible to have someone who is familiar with batteries replace your old ones with new ones at a substantially lower cost than buying a new one from Niterider. I have to admit that I haven't done that with my dead Niterider, but I have been quoted $20 -30 by somone who deals with batteries at computer fair. He said my Digital Pro used D-cells and that it could be easily done and reattached to the original leads. It might be worth looking into since Niterider replacement batteries are pricy. Of course, you might just want to up grade to an HID system instead?

I don't know if you have any interest, but as recently the beginning of 2004, Niterider had a program where you could trade in your old light and get a discount on a new one purchased directly from them.

check out batteryspace.com -- they've got a whole section on batteries for bike lights; as long as you match the voltage, you'd be set, and you can upgrade to a Lithium or NiCad/NiMH battery while you're at it.

Any Radio Shack (available throughout the galaxy, I believe). I bought a watch battery today at the Shack and asked how much of their business is in batteries. I guessed "around 20%". The manager said "no, more like 60%" (!!!!!)

Yeah Radio SHack NiMH batteries are freaking BANK...like $4 each or something...I had ot buy four of them during my last RS run, and holy crap they are expensive.

BUT...the place is close enough that I can't complain too much :)
