New Chain, Old Cassette

I replaced my campy chain 2 weeks ago without changing the cassette. They seem to be getting along fine with minimal slipping, but I have been developing a ticking/knocking noise under load.

Could this noise be coming from the combo of new chain, old cassette, or should I look elsewhere? Don't want to needlessly put on a new cassette.

Chain and cassette had about 4000 miles on them before i replaced the chain.

I'd say it is.
It doesn't make sense that in a matter of a mile that a cassette would go from "fine" to slipping the chain.

It's possible the OP started out in a little used, larger cog and it was fine until he shifted into a smaller, more worn one and the slipping started.

buying new chains frequently preserves the wear of the cassette teeth ..

There should be no slipping.

Thanks for the responses. Going to put a new cassette on today. I should have changed the chain sooner.

Lesson learned.

When you clean the chain measure it for wear. It should be replaced when it shows 1/16" in 12" of chain.

could be your bottom bracket, my chain/cassette wore out around the same time as my bottom bracket.

Yes, the sound is coming from the bottom bracket. Brought the bike by the LBS and had them test ride it, and they confirmed my suspicions. So far so good as far as the cassette is concerned. No slipping the past couple of rides. Did a 60 mile ride today with no problems.

BTW, is using a ruler the most effective way of measuring campy chain wear? I have been using the basic Park Tool chain gauge, and even after 3500 miles, the chain was not showing any wear according to the tool.
