Shimano inter 8 shifting issues.
I have a fairly new, 2 moths old, shimano inter-8 hub that is now acting up. I installed the hub myself and after about a week, got it perfectly adjusted so all 8 gears worked great. Then suddenly after about a month or so of perfect operation gears 5-8 now want to skip. I can get gears 1-4 to shift as expected, but no amount of adjusting seems to want to fix the issue. I can get around fine on gears 1-4, but it would be nice to have the option to use those gears.
I don't ride hard, and only apply light to moderate pressure on the pedals. Just enough to get going at a slow pace.

it is my understanding
that the nexus and alfine internally geared hubs
are very finicky when it comes to cable routing
a problem i have had when trying to kludge together a working bike
is that if you use the wrong anti turn washers
the cable has a very good chance of touching the chain
which can make the shifting act like it has ants in its pants
edit
this statement raises red flags for me
nexus hubs generally have one adjustment to make
and that is to set the cable tension so that the lines on the hub are lined up when the shifter is in the marked gear
and if that adjustment is made correctly
the hub should work perfectly the first time
so
please describe your setup including
droupout type ie vertical or horizontal
which anti rotation washers you are using
how you have your cable routed
and which shifters you are using
a picture would be very helpful

Gears 5 thru 8 are attained when the clutch engages the planet carrier and by passes the low range reduction gear. Best bet is the clutch is not fully engaging, possibly due to a weak spring, or more likely the tabs are hanging up in the shift spring mechanism.
You need to find somebody that has the tools and know how to disassemble it that far.

I have the tools and have taken the inter-3, inter-7, and inter-8 apart many times before (and yes, got them back together and working without mysterious "spare parts"). Figured I'd ask as even though I know a lot about these hubs, I do not know everything. I'll have a look tonight and see if I can spot a problem once it's out of the shell. That part is at least simple to do.

I was hoping it was a simpler problem.

The drive side cone nut was loose. Tightened it down and then tightened the lock nut. Did not have to adjust a thing. Works great again. Did my shopping rounds and not one skip (about 15 miles total). I'll not worry about the yellow marks not lining up as it works fine again. Wish all problems were this simple. I was worried it was something internal.

All 8 gears, yes. I actually have checked to ensue I am getting all 8 as I to am a bit concerned by how much the mark needs to be off. But as long as it works and gets me around town, thats all I really care. I may just have a misaligned hub, and I can live with that. Shifting is smooth and trouble free.
