Rear wheel squeak

When coasting at low speeds there is a intermittent squeak (sorta like a squeal/honk, or squonk) that is coming from my rear wheel (relatively new mtn bike). Could there be dirt/dust in the rear hub that is causing this? It's really getting annoying. Any ideas on what i can check?
Thanks

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Hubs vary in construction, but many use rubber seals or boots over the axle. When new and still dry, they can squeak, honk, or chirp. After a while some grease weeps out of the hub and lubricates them ending the noise, though it might come back after riding in the rain for a while. Once you know that's what you're hearing you can ignore it, or run one drop of oil under the seal to quiet it.

However, there's always the chance that something else is going on, and since the bike is new, you might ask the shop to check it out (FREE).

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, the noise didn't occur until recently (after a few months of riding). I guess i'll take it to the shop and have them check it out...just hard to find the time to get by there.
