I read, I am lost, wtf did I just read. Would it not just be easier to oil the chain like the rest of us, squirt every several rides or 100 miles. It's just a bike chain, no?

You are lost because some joker who, by his own admission, is bored, decided to take a concept that is simple enough that can be explained to a kindergardener and attempted to turn it (incorrectly) into a PhD level research project. He did it to bait me and I took the bait. For that I am sorry. I had him on my ignore list and I should have left him there but didn't. I apologize for allowing the discussion to spiral away from TromboneAl's original question.

I have tried waxing chains in the past and found the method just too tedious... and not a little dangerous...without improving the outcome enough to keep doing it. It is much, much, much cleaner than oil based lubricants but there's just too much work involved. I also tried it several years before wax based lubricants became available on the market and those lubricants are almost as clean as hot wax without the work.

I've only recently started dunking my chain in wax and so far I don't find it to be too much work. I have the space with everything conveniently set up so that helps. It is *so* much cleaner, and IMO saves time overall by avoiding having to frequently clean cassettes, rings, pulleys, etc. It's nice to get compliments on my clean drivetrain, too :-)
