help with front derailleur

I've got a 15 speed bike in need of a new front derailleur. My question is can a 10 speed derailleur work on a 15 speed bike? Thanks for the help.

I believe what you mean by "10-speed" isn't what 10-speed means now. In the past 10-speed meant a double crank and a 5-speed freewheel or 10 total gear choices. Today "10-speed" means a 10 cog cassette and a double or triple crank for 20 or 30 gear possibilities. Modern 10-speed front derailleurs are designed to work with a much narrower chain than the old 10 and 15-speed bikes and won't work properly with the older wide chain.

The answer depends on a number of factors, some of which are not easily able to be fully known without hands on. Some of the issues are- What's the range of movement that the der has WRT the amount the two or three rings need. What's the ring's difference in teeth counts and does the der cage accommodate this difference. What's the large ring's tooth count WRT the cage's curvature. What's the large ring to inside of crank arm gap and does the der cage have a "thickness" to it or is in a flat plate w/out any contouring. There are other issues but these are the biggies. Andy.
