Pedal click - how do I stop it from coming back?

I keep getting the once-a-crank-revolution click that comes from the pedals under load. I take the pedals off, clean the threads and grease them, then reinstall and tighten and it goes away. For maybe two months. Then it comes back. I have to loosen and retighten the pedals to make it stop. What gives? Could this be used as another excuse to upgrade my crankset?

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

A stainless steel pedal washer prevents the issue 95% of the time.

Otherwise, usually no need to remove and regrease. Simply loosen a hair and "floss" around the mating surfaces with a piece of string and retighten.

So the click comes from where the crank face meets the flat part of the pedal bolt thingy?

This is a case where the cure confirms the diagnosis. The face that you solve it the way you do, says that's the case.
