Where did my trim go**********

So I just replaced my derailuer cables on my Ultegra and I don't have any front D trim. It clicks but the front cage doesn't move any.
It's on a S-Works Tarmac. The clear straw that the cable goes through down underneath the BB had a glitch where I couldn't get my tip of the cable back through so I just disregarded using the clear straw for now. It seems to slip through well enough. Any thoughts???

Yes I did lightly oil the cable with my chain lube. Yes I did try to give the tension a little more slack still nothing.

Please help

I suspect that you might have over-tightened the adjustment. So the FD is jammed up against the limit, and cable stretch is making up the difference in the high and high/trim position.

If there's an inline adjuster, back off the tension a bit and see if it makes a difference.

Otherwise you can test my theory by backing off the high limit and seeing if you get two positions. Unfortunately they'll be overshifted and just right, but you'll know and can proceed from there.

Any chance you attached the cable to the front derailleur without clicking the inner lever of the brifter several time to assure it was in the lowest (most relaxed) position?

Another reason for no cable movement when employing the trim feature is too much cable friction. Andy.

So I'm back. I was tearing my hair out so I took a break for a bit. I was able to now make the trim work. But now I have a reverse problem. I can't get up on my big ring without clicking once and then moving up to the big ring. Like trim only backwards on the other end of the stick. I'm now thinking it's a friction problem. Is the missing clear straw on the bottom bracket required? I know lots of bikes ddon't have that. In fact, I just went and looked at my S-works Roubaix and it does not have that clear straw casing in the underneath of the BB.

I bought the Tarmac 8-10 months ago. The casings look in real good shape, and I lightly oiled the cable before running it back through.

Thoughts???

Cable tension and friction account for almost all the "call and response" issues that we see at the shop. But confirm the lever's functions by pulling on the cable as it exits the lever or the housing loop before it enters the frame. You should be able to click the lever through every trim and primary position with ease. Then with the cable fully routed and attached to the der do the same. If there's a difference then the cable run is suspect. internal routing has much more chance for friction, hence all the attempts to lessen friction. Like low friction "straws" at the BB. We often will replace cables which "look" fine and any cable liners/straws and find much better der control resulting. BTW we only suggest stainless steel cables for internal routed systems. Andy.
