Standard Tune Up?
Today I collided with a car coming out of a drive way - the impact was minor, my rim was slightly bent and the driver compensated me $30
I went to two bike shops and was told by both mechanics the wheel is good and a rim adjustment was not necessary. They would have charged me $15 otherwise.
However, I had to loosen the front brakes on a large scale so that it would stop grinding against the rim. The front brakes are not too powerful now, having to crank them all the way to the point where it almost touches the handlebar. One shop told me they will adjust the brakes, clean out my chain/cassette and re align the rim for $70, the other shop $80.
I am wondering what the standard tune up prices are in NYC before I go back to them? And is it possible to straighten out the rim myself without special tools?

You went to 2 shops, and neither saw the rim rubbing the brake pads ?
Does the rim wobble side to side when it spins, or did it get knocked a bit sideways so that it's crooked in the fork, but spins "true" ?

I'm working at Larry's Freewheeling currently. Standard tuneup is $50 and includes light truing. A real wheel true job is $15.

Standard tuneup is something that every bicyclist should be able to do it themselves. It's easy, saves you money, and it's very rewarding. Bicycles needs adjustment all the time. It's not a one time a year deal. If you know how to do it, you will be able to fix/adjust your gears, woobly tire or brakes any time it's needed, even if it's 50 miles from the nearest bike shop. Internet is full of free "how to" guides.
