White Industries Freewheel SSCX Application Questions
 

Super long, super sad story made super short.

Lack of luck and skills has left me with n - 1 bikes, and I'm trying to make it right by salvaging what I can and building a SSCX ride for the upcoming Fall season.

I'd like to invest in a couple of nice eBay special White Industries freewheels to complete the new build.

However, the ONLY available crankset in the parts bin is an 11-speed Campy 135mm BCD, new style, which can only fit proprietary 11-speed rings (which I have.)

The WI freewheels are listed as 8 speed - 3/32".

I only have 10 speed and 11 speed KMC and Campy chains. Pin width differential on the 10 speed v. 8 speed is 1mm and the 11 speed is obviously even more.

Questions:

1) Has anyone run a WI freewheel with a 10/11 speed chain? Will I just destroy the chain in a few races?

2) Can (should) I attempt to run the correct 3/32" chain on the 11-speed chainring? Will I just eat the chainring away in a few races?

3) What is my least costly option to make this happen? The only rear wheel available is a WI ENO hub with a tubular rim. I do not have a rear wheel that I'm willing to sacrifice to play the 11-speed cog and spacer game with. They're all clinchers, anyway. I'm not 100% committed to the WI freewheel option, BUT I do have a $75 credit to a seller that is offering them, and at that level of discount, I can basically get three different sizes for around $100 out-of-pocket, and that's a pretty sweet deal to pass on.

nothing wrong with a wider chain on thinner teeth of the chainring . pick the chain width for the cog thickness ..
which ever is most.


you might get a generic chainring and just file the 5th hole till it fits. fabricate and adapt.

buy a KMC sl9 chain. superlight and will fit any cog or chainring 3/32 or less in width. if too expensive just get any kmc 9 8 or 7 speed chain. some can be had for less than 15.

on my new build i've got a shimano 7900 crank (10 speed) with the KMC SL9 chain mated to an ACS crossfire SS freewheel (3/32). quiet as a mouse.

Our courses here are sand, muddy sand, and grass growing out of sand. I was worried that the extra tolerance would just allow the elements to chew up the teeth.

I had also thought about using an older 135mm ring and just taking the Dremel to it.

theres the wolf tooth thing too a thicker tooth fits in between the outer links a thinner one between the inside (but probably not in 135)

and Surly's stainless steel chainrings.

I have a SS 110 38t on my Rohloff 26"wheel bike. no shift aide details ..
so it wont do anything funny..

cheap generic 135 is probably your best bet , though a whole new crank is not that dear

if you can stand down market Asian components.. Or Stronglight (who seem to go there too)..

I don't know anything about the wolf tooth. I'll check that out now on Google.

And I can certainly stand any kind of components. HOWEVER, if my wife gets another box delivered to our house she will literally murder me.

My pegboard has four beautiful TA rings hanging on it. I don't even have a TA crank. It's just because. Yeah, unless it's a chain or some discounted freewheels, I can't do it. If she sees the box that the crankset will be delivered in, her mind will go "that's 300€ at least, and if he says it's only 30€ he's lying." :)

The frame is also BB30 and that would require another adapter and hence, another box being delivered. :)

Here, a business to business UPS delivery, If both have commercial accounts,

costs less than a delivery to your home .. just saying .. :innocent:
