Chainring Direction. Suntour XC Pro
I did not pay attention on which way the rings go on. The big and middle have both sides machined at the base of the teeth. The small 24 ring is flat on one side and machined on one side. Which way should it go?

Bore holes are straight cut, no chamfer.

Chainrings have ramps and/or pins to catch the chain and help it onto the teeth. These should face the inside, towards the chain.

If the holes are just straight holes it doesn't matter .. I have a Surly stainless steel chainring ..
you can flip them over for 2x the wear life..

If there aren't any countersinks, I'd mount the granny ring so that it has the same center-to-center distance as the other two.

Generally the old SunTour grannys are mounted with the flat side out (toward the other chainrings). As Scott said, double check that the tip to face distance to the middle ring ais the same as that of the middle to outside ring.
In any case the issue is that the chain cannot ride the tips of the teeth while leaning on the face of the middle ring. At the opposite extreme, being too close can cause the chain to over shift and miss the ring, or touch the middle when using the granny with the outer half of the cassette.

Posessive vs contraction! Thanks man! My grammar teacher, Mrs. McQuillen, lives on in my heart. Funny, but I now type all day. I had to fill out forms by hand this week. My writing is horrible. Computers suck. Now where is my fountain pen......

If there is a chain catching pin on the big ring it should be mounted immediately behind the crank arm and, of course, facing it. Typically the engraving (brand name and tooth count) face outward but Shimano does the opposite with the small and granny rings.

This is a true antique. No catch pin and no hole for a grub screw. I could drill and tap but I seldom toss a chain and if so its inboard. The bar end friction shifters I have are pretty good in the amount of throw they deliver. And I will use. Mountech high normal FD, so the upshift pressure is always the same.

The use of 'impact' instead of 'affect' makes me insane. Where is that at? No! "Eksetera" ???! It is getting worse as people type more. What is more disturbing is to find that stuff in major newspapers.
