the pads consist of wear material bonded to a metal back plate. They're dead when you've worn down to the plate. Since they rarely wear evenly, it's when you first wear to the plat in any spot. Sound is a good indicator. The brakes will sound one way for most of their life, and the sound will change when they're worn through.
However sound alone can fool you since dirt, sand or other contamination might make them sound different, so take off the wheel and look.
BTW- I hope I don't have to remind you not to squeeze the brake lever while the wheel is off unless you replace the disc with a "keeper" of some kind.

Take the brake pads out and look.. + 1 on blocking the caliper , .. of course a bigger block can go on the handlebar
under the lever.. so it wont move..
also with the goal of disabling the accidental squeezing of the brake lever while the wheel and pads are out.

There is a spring plate which goes between the pads on most disc brakes. The pads are worn when the rotor is close to contacting the spring. This is about 0.5mm off contacting the backing plate.

OK seems my pads are worn. I first thought I had press the lever with wheel off. One pad is completely done and part of the metal plate is broken and contacting rotor. Would this mean new pads? thanks
