10 spd shifter and 10 spd rear derailleur w/ 9 spd cassette?

Hi,

I know you can use a 10 spd shifter w/ an 9 speed cassette and RD... and you can run 10 spd rear derailleur w/ a 9 spd cassette and shifters.

The question is, can you have both a 10 spd shifter and 10 spd RD w/ a 9 spd cassette? Or is that asking for trouble?

Thank you,
Marc

Yes, you need to match the shifters speed to the cassette speed.

This is incorrect (unless you're using an alternate cable routing or some kind of cable-pull modifier).

As jimc101 said, the shifter and cassette need to match speeds.

The speed of an RD is pure marketing. It will go where the shifter tells it to go. (For Shimano indexed shifting setups, this is true so long as nothing is old Dura Ace or new Dyna-Sys, which both use different cable pull ratios than everything else.)

I routinely use 10-speed shifters with 9-speed cassettes, using the alternate cable routing technique. I adjust the cable so the last shift makes the cable more slack. It works perfectly.

Generally there's no difference between 9 and 10-speed shimano rear derailleurs, unless they're the new "Dyna-sys" 10-speed mountain derailleurs. Just make sure to adjust the limit screws correctly!

True but there is a significant difference between 9 and 10-speed cassettes.
