30 GI to 90 GI, or maybe 25 GI to 75 GI range should be enough for just about anything, IME.

Ha! The crankset is so far away from the cogset on each of the recumbent bikes I ride that cross chaining is hardly an issue. (44" to 51")

I've just gone to 1x10 with a 42t and 11-34. This is only just shy of the range of my compact 50/34t with 12-30.
as others have said, using a single ring with a BB that puts the chain line in between where the two rings sat previously makes for just as smooth a drive train as the compact 2x10.

On my mountain setup 1x8 34 front, 11-32 cass.
town setup 1x8 36t and 11-30.
road setup 40t 1x6 13-23.
Only cross chain probs are in low gear on the road(not used much) and the highest gear on the mtn (also not used much).
I also enjoy 36x16 ss mtb and a 34x13 heavy cruiser.
Funny, just built a 36t by 1x7 12-30 commuter and I find out the new latest greatest dh group is 1x7!

Even in the worst cases of cross chaining on a triple, you're still only crossing past an extra 2-3 sprockets, not the entire cassette.

You can set it up to cross all of them if you wish.....My granny gear will cross the whole cassette....My crank is set up to favor granny and the middle ring....the big ring is a 42 toothed bash guard...
There's no law that says the crank gears must be centered with the cassette if you don't use them all.
I just changed from 8 to 9 speed to get a 36 tooth gear....I'll never use the 12-14-17 or whatever they are.In fact I adjust the derailer so it won't even go there.....Care to buy some new low tooth count cogs,got a whole drawer full of 8 speed ones....

Its not Ideal .. you just replace the chain more frequently if cog 1 and 10, or 11 are the ones you use most of the time.

I've used the entire cassette with the middle ring of every triple I've ever owned. Even though there are now 11 gears in the back, the cassette width has only grown like 5mm (no growth with campagnolo stuff). There's no issue here.
Get the cranks centered right so the single chainring is where the middle ring of a triple would be and you're good to go.
