Replace freehub?
I am thinking about upgrading my 2007 Allez with the Shimano 105, 5800 groupset and was wondering if the 8-speed freehub will need to be replaced to accommodate the 11-speed cassette. If my current freehub won't work can I just replace the freehub or do I need replace the whole hub/axle assembly?

also if the 11 speed requires a new hub, that could make it wider than your rear triangle can take, right?

Thanks for the reply. It has the stock Specialized/SRAM PG850, 12-26t, according to the specs.

The new freehub on 11 speed wheels is 1.85 mm wider, but the axle width is still 130 mm. Without some clever machining*, there really isnt a way to make a an 11 speed cassette fit on those wheels. For about $50.00 you can get a good quality replacement hub (11 speed, such as the 105 5800 hub) and rebuild the wheel, and all should be fine.
*I've read reports of using a lathe to remove 1.85 mm of material from the back of the hub, It worked so long as the cassette was large enough to keep the derailleur low and away from the spokes. Unless you own a lathe, or are willing to risk it, it's probably not worth the cost.

i would think about whether or not the drive-side locknut would clear the cassette lockring or not if an 11 speed freehub were put on an 8 speed hub shell. if it doesn't and if the hub axle is threaded and uses cones and locknuts, you may be able to move the axle over a bit and gain a 2-3 millimeters, but if the hub shell (without the freehub), is more than a few millimeters wider than an 11 speed hub shell (and i don't know if it is narrower, the same or wider), you may be out of luck.

Thank you for all the replies. Is it possible to replace just the freewheel body with the latest one, Shimano part # Y31F98070? I just can't afford a new groupset and new wheels right now.
