Wheel Replacement Question
I posted this at the Road Cycling, before I realized it probably fits over here better.
I am perusing catalogs looking at new Road wheels - I see some mention they are Shimano compatible wheels and sets mention they are Campy compatible. I then look at the Performance wheelsets and they say nothing of compatibility with either system
Do I need to make sure a new rear wheel is compatible with my Shimano Brand 9 speed cassette, or do most wheels fit all brands of 8/9 speed cassettes. My Trek 7700FX rear cassette is Shimano Deore XT 11-34, 9 speed. Since Performance is having a big sale, I figured I would get a new set of wheels while they are cheap and hang on to them until mine finally go bad (I am starting commuting). When I called Performance, they said the cassette would just slide right on, but then why are some wheels marked for specific Shimano or Campy compatibility? (Performance couldn't answer this one)
2nd Question..... On my old bike, I am also assuming that I need a special hub or special wheel to fit my older Shimano MF-Z012 Model 6-speed Freewheel Freehub as well. I haven't taken the Freehub off the old wheel yet, but am itching to fix up my old bike.
I couldn't find anything about this in my bike mechanic guide....
Thanks
Rick

The Shimano and Campy rear freehub spline patterns are different. Most companies make the Shimano version but only a few bother to make Campy. All performance wheels are Shimano compatable so you should be fine there. BTW, 8 and 9 speed Shimano freehubs are the same - and can accept a 10 speed cassette as well. It's just that a 10 speed hub can not go back in time and take a 8/9 cassette.
I'm not sure about freewheel hubs so I'll let someone else answer that question.

Thanks for the responses. I just got back from my LBS (I just moved to this area and my old LBS was the kind of place that I felt that if I wasn't spending large sums of money, they didn't have time for questions - I recall always feeling apprehensive whenever I walked in there cuz these guys seemed intersted in everthing else except customer service and customer relations).
(edited: No offense to any age groups)
This LBS was great - Run by 2 older gents who removed my freewheel for free and checked my wheels out and explained the best way to repack the bearings and suggested I do a little trueing, otherwise my 20 year old wheels are still fine. They could have taken me by selling me 2 new wheels, but they didn't - In fact they suggested I come to their next workshop to teach folks how to strip everything down. I was really impressed - Far different than the LBS that I used to go to. I am actually even looking forward to my next trip there.
Hope you all are having a great weekend
