Wheel compatability help

Hello,

I bought my wife a Trek 7.2FX hybrid bike. I am trying to set her up for the Fall/Winter with a separate wheel for the trainer. Will an 8-speed cassette work on a Shimano wheel that is rated for 9/10 speed cassettes? I am looking at a Tiagra or 105 rear wheel. Any other recommendations for a cheap rear wheel?

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Yes, but make sure the axle width is the same, ie. 126, 130, or 135, to match the bike.

I believe (I'm not a Shimano maven) that the freehub body width is the same for Shimano 8s-10s, but it doesn't matter if I'm wrong. The 8s cassette won't be wider, and if it's narrower, you can add spacers behind it to bring the front edge out 1mm beyond the face of the freehub so the lockring can bear on it without bottoming against the freehub body.

I just added a Sunrace 8-speed cassette on a Vuelta Corsa Lite Shimano 9/10 rear wheel with no spacers and it works great. I actually had a 1mm spacer on there previously but was experiencing a lot of cassette/chain noise which went away after I removed the spacer.

Isn't the 7.2FX spaced @ 135mm?
If so, you want a "mountain" hub, not "road".

8/9/10 speed use the same body.
10 speed actually requires a 1mm spacer.

IF it's for a trainer, why not get a generic 8/9 speed "mountain" wheel at the LBS for $50-60.

I asked the folks at trek and they said the rear wheel spacing is 130mm.

Seems a little excessive for my wife's needs. I already have a kurt kinetic trainer that she will be using.

Bikes: Burley Duet [of some unknown year] (the guinea pig); 2001 Ventana ECDM (the project); And always one less than I think I really need.

Just out of curiosity, why a "trainer" wheel?

Also know that 8 & 9 speed cogs are interchangeable. Just the spacers are different width's.

So when my wife wants to ride outside, all I have to do is swap wheels for her. The trainer tires are a beast to take off and put back on again.
