This is the cost of fixing up bike. Unless you buy used bikes (that aren't too worn out) for parts. When new "modern" rings are going for $30 to 60 for the common and a few times that for the nice stuff $25 is a deal.

Another question for those still interested. I'm still thinking about purchasing a new set of cranks vs chainrings. Here are two examples of what I'm looking at.
Amazon.com : Shimano M131 Crankset (170mm, 48/38/28) : Bike Cranksets And Accessories : Sports & Outdoors
Amazon.com : Shimano M171 Mountain Bicycle Crankset - w/Chainguard - FC-M171 : Bike Chainrings And Accessories : Sports & Outdoors
Both are square taper, 122mm bb length. My existing bottom bracket is 121mm. This wouldn't be a problem would it?

Also, If I go with new chainrings, would these work? Are they any good? I can get them from Amazon or directly from Vuelta for about the same price.

Reviving this semi old thread. I've put this on hold for a while and ready to make some changes.
I found a pretty good deal on Vuelta chainrings. My question today is...Can I use a ramped/pinned OUTER chainring (48t) with a NON-ramped/pinned MIDDLE chainring(38t)? Both will be Vuelta branded.
48t Vuelta SE PLUS SE Plus Chain Ring Black, 34 - 48T, Bolt Center Diameter: 110mm
38t Vuelta SE SE Chain Ring, 34 - 60T, Bolt Center Diameter: 110mm
