noise from chain ring area only when right food stepping down
Hi there,
This might be my first question asked here.
I've just noticed that there was some noise coming from chain ring area, when right foot is pushed down. What would be the area that should be inspect? The bottom bracket?
Regards

Bottom bracket itself is possible, but more typical is crank arm with pedal or spindle, chainwheel bolts, or BB not tightened in frame. Creaks, Clicks & Clunks is helpful. We can't help further without more info:
- What is "some noise" - clicking, clunk, creak, etc)?
- How old is the bike, what brand/model?
- Any recent maintenance or accidents in BB area?
- What type of BB do you have (Square taper, BB30, etc. Again, for more info: Sheldon Brown's Bottom Bracket Size Database
- Do you have crank extractor, 15mm wrench, metric Allen wrenches?

Thanks for the reply, let me try to describe the symptom below:
The noise seems to be grinding like.
It's the Giordana Libero 1.6, large sized, bought 2nd hand. It's 2x8
The front derailleur was rusty, so I replaced with a Shimano 105 (5700?). Not aware of the accident.
The bicycle was dirty and oily, so I cleaned up the oily chain using the chain-cleaning device and fluid from Performance, then applied some dry lube + some 3-in-1 oil on the chain, rear hub, around BB, the area
where pedal meets crank arm
It's square taper
Yes, I've got general mechanic tools, some bicycle specific tools (might have a 15mm wrench), do have a bbt-9 (bottom bracket tool), ccp-22 (Crank Puller for Square Taper Cranks), pw-5 (pedal wrench), etc.
TIA

If you can elevate the bike, and spin the cranks by hand, you'll be able to locate the sound better. If you can remove your pedals and check for play in the spindles, that would be a good start.

Grinding is unlikely to be from loose bolts. I would do as noted above, and see if you can feel any roughness as well. You may have a rough area on the bearing surfaces on the right side of the spindle, but that's just an educated guess. We are not going to be able to come much closer - you need to do the Sherlock bit.
