    Another day another spoke

    Hey.
I went for a ride today, and snapped another spoke on the back wheel. The spoke that got broken was on the cogs side. About three weeks ago I had two spokes snap there. I brought the wheel to LBS and they replaced the spokes and trued the wheel. Did they not do a good job, or is there something else going on?
I checked and it wasn't rear derailure that did it.

    thanks

    How old is the bike?

When spokes start breaking I think that it's important to figure out what is making them break or you are doomed to repeated breakage.

If you have ever shifted into the spokes, even if for only a couple of seconds, you probably need to replace all eight of the freehub side outside spokes because they'll have been buggered. If that's not the case, I'd probably vote for a complete wheel build but I'd be picky about who I hired to do it.

So it wasnt the same spoke that the shop replaced then right? If thats the case, your best bet is replace all spokes, they have a fatigue life.

Umm I don't think I shifted in to it. Although it is be a possibility, now that I think about it the spoke snapped on the uphilll.
How much would rebuild cost, just a rough guestimate. I have a wheel with black spokes.

    Thx.

well, depending on if you want new rims/hubs the cost can varry. Aslo it has to do with what type of spoke you want. Black spokes cost more. From waht i have seen, one wheel build tends to go 35-50 dollars. Do you know what kind of spokes you have now? butted? guage? brand?

It's not butted, ritchey hub, Alex RL-2002 rim that came with the bike. As for gauge, I think it's 14ga.
I called couple bike shop's and was quoted 76-88 bucks for rebuild. Basically thats just replacing all the spokes and truing the wheel.

well 88 bucks is probably for straight guage spokes. I would consider spending a few extra $ and going for butted spokes. THers plenty of info online why

I talked to bike shop that pice is for double butted ones. Plus they will refund me for the work they did on the wheel to get it straight again. I'm starting to like that bike shop.

sounds good. What guages are to be used? I dont know what your riding habits are but, try Sapim spokes. From THor USA you can get a pack of 20 2.0/1.5/2.0mm (equal to DT revolution which sells for about 1 dollar per) for 11.25. Not too shabby
