Placement of DIY chain keeper over crank? (1x9 drivetrain)

Placement of DIY chain keeper over crank? (1x9 drivetrain)
I'm setting up a budget 1x9 commuter with a DIY chain keeper (made from an old front derailleur clamp and some washers)
By flipping the clamp, I can have two mounting options. One holds the washers right at the top of the chainring (Location A), the other places them "before" the chainring (Location B)

Is one of these positions more effective than the other?

I put mine between A and B, straight out from the seat tube. I believe that further back is better as long as it doesn't drag when on the small cog. The idea is to just give the chain a touch when it starts to crawl off, not to physically force it to stay on the ring.

Get either a wolftooth narrow wide chain ring or a rear der. with one of the new clutches. Might defeat the low cost. Tried running without? I don't on my 1x8. Or try a chain keeper on the inside and bash ring on the outside.

I was guessing further back (option B) was best, but I have no understanding of the physics of chain dropping.
I'm guessing it's caused by a sort of wave of chain coming from the rear and moving towards the crank, just enough to hop the chain off of the first tooth.
With the chain keeper in the B position, it would chop off the crest of that wave and keep it in place
I may be off-base there.
I believe the truly cheap alternative is using an unmodified front derailleur with the adjustment screws set just right. Just trying to do something more aesthetically pleasing

The front der should work ok. Make sure the chain is the correct length, ie not too long with too much slack. Post up a finished pic and results later. Thanks.

Doing some research, Paul Components has a guide to mounting their chain keeper, and they place it in position A, but I have photographic evidence of it being used in both positions
