Hi everyone,
I am a newbie mechanic with a question on brake pads. I own a 2011 Surly Long Haul Trucker with center pull (I think?) brakes and 622 x18 rims. I want to replace the pads. These look like a good replacement: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A2TE9IQP68MWQU. I have pictures of my brake set up below. Will the Kool Stop pads that I want to get fit my brakes? Thanks!

Those are cantilever brakes. Linear brakes are commonly called V brakes, which are side pull version of cantilever brakes.
You can purchase linear brake pads or specific canti pads.

Buy cartridge pads, they stop better.

Short answer, yes the linked pads will work.

Longer answer. The long curved shape will be a touch more difficult to set up. The red/blk mix isn't likely to do much different the all black as the black, with the usual toe in, will bear most of the contact. And last I really dislike the little ramp at the leading end. I grind these off at work when I install them. Andy.

I can't see picture very well, but don't you already have cartridge brakepads?....metal casing around the pads.

They are the same pads as you would fit to v-type brakes, the ones in the Amazon link the OP gave would work, but as the OP already has cartridge pad holders, the better option would be to get the pads only. like these Amazon.com : Kool Stop V Bicycle Brake Pad Inserts (Salmon) : Bike Brake Pad Inserts : Sports & Outdoors

Just the Front long tail V brake shoe will extend back between the fork blades ,
so removing the front wheel will require either loosening & turning the pads , or letting the air out..

The Cross Bike Sector has made a shorter Pad with the same Screw Bolt also available..

I just looked at the pads. There is no metal case around the pads. They are attached with a bolt of sorts that has a bunch of parts around it.

Everyone has been going on the photos in your original post being of your bike, if you are now saying that the pads don't have a metal case round them, you need to post a picture of your actual brakes, as the pads in the photo are clearly cartridge pads, the directional arrows are printed on the metal cartridge section.

Some pads are marked with arrows even without being cartridged. What does Surly have to say? Or the place you bought it?

Tektro Oryx come with cartridge pads, and the ones you listed from Amazon are not and would be a step down IMO.
Cartridge brakes work better, regardless of Koolstop, cool factor or not.
Just replace the rubber pad in the cartridge, and if you want Koolstop replacement cartridges look for those.

Your current brakes pads look fine, what's the problem?

Those do not look like cartridge pads,and it doesn't look like they come stock with them. The pads you linked to in your first post will work,but the extra length may come into contact with the fork when you open the brakes to pull the wheel. These would be the 'proper' pads for canti's.

Also curious why you're changing them? The current pads look fine. If you're going to be riding in bad weather,the Kool Stop salmons will work better,if that's what you're going for.

They are clearly cartridge pads, look at the printing of the R and Forward, these are printed on the cartridge, the pad slots into this.

For your link, that has the same arms, not the same pads, so will be a different SKU.

Hi everybody,
Wow, thanks for all the responses. In answer to why I want to change the pads, I live outside Boston, MA and we are way overdue for some serious winter storms. My stopping power is ok but I would like a little better. I had some trouble stopping a couple times in wet weather last winter. Also, I am seeking to remedy some screechiness from the brakes.

Having used Tektro pads before, the best thing to do to with them to improve braking power was to replace the pads, Koolstop Salmon are the normal Default BF choice, my personal choice is Swissstop GXP II, but that's more down to poor Koolstop availability in the UK than you have in the US.
