.02 from the Bleachers

One would perhaps best start from the Component side , Get an Italian Brand's Carbon frame , that normally Builds around the Parts You wanted, to fit.

Given Trek has designed their Frames around Using the Asian made Components . it is a step back to make a step Forward..

every thing <C> But the crankset Is Perhaps a lower Barrier to Surmount..

As I say -- dry fit, first. Issue wasn't getting the cups in, it was that once they were in and would not go further, the outside faces were too wide for the crank to install. Mechanic is one who knows what he's doing and has worked with Campy for ages. Chances are, your setup will be fine.

Trek frames are supposedly compatible, and they sell the higher end ones through their Project One program with an option of Campy groups.

This is what I'm counting on - hope my frame isn't too wide at the BB once the cups are in! Was it that the cups wouldn't go in all the way, or just that the frame with cups was too wide for the UT cranks?

The latter. Word from Trek is that it "should have worked" and were stumped; buddy went with SRAM to get the bike built that day, rather than go back and forth, shipping the frame back to have it checked out in Waterloo. I believe he went as far as using a headset press to try to get them in, but stopped short of wrecking the frame to do it. So they appeared to be seated, but still too wide when trying to install the crank.

Could the washers be extra, in case the frame is too narrow? I assume he tried it without them?

He was having a real bad day and as a result, I was not hovering to see what he was up to, so no more info than that... Knowing this guy, I'd assume he tried all the ways to make it work. As I say, extremely competent mechanic, very familiar with Campy (he was the shop's "campy shifter rebuild guy"), so I trust that it just was not working out for him. However, could have been he was doing something stupid/wrong. I wouldn't worry about it until you get all the parts and pieces together and start assembly... but I would start with the BB/crank.

Do you think I could press the cups in without glue, install the cranks, and see if all is OK - then, remove the cranks and pop the cups out to glue them in if everything fits?

It's a question, because if pressing in the cups and removing them might mess up something, cause the fit to loosen, etc. I wouldn't attempt it.

Update (finally)!

I glued in the adapter cup guides, installed the UT cranks, and from what I can tell - got a perfect fit! No slop, no creaking, just solid contact and tight fitting cranks!

I am still building up the bike, but so far, the adapters work perfectly in the Madone!
