Thoughts on running a 28mm tire tubeless on a wide rim?

Hey all,

I recently finished up my latest build (Litespeed T5G flatbar) and have been trying to decide which tires to use. The Wheels are Crank Brothers Iodine 2's so they are ready to run tubeless. I purchased a set of Schwalbe Ultremo tires in 28mm because I heard they run a little larger than specified and I was looking for something around 32mm.

Anyway, I've built a bunch of bicycles over the years but I have never gone tubeless. What are your thoughts on running a non-tubeless 28mm road tire on a 23mm wide rim? I'm thinking I will need to use a sealant (Stan's) but other than that are there any pitfalls I should consider with this setup?

Thanks
'Mash

The only acceptable tire I know of would be the Hutchinson Sector 28 road tubeless tire. If there are other road tubeless 28's on the market that I don't know about, then they would be candidates as well. I can tell you the Sectors are great tires if you want a wider than spec, round profile 28mm road tire. And they are road tires that are specifically designed to be run tubeless, which with road tire pressures, is a must. I run my Sectors in the low 80's psi range, FWIW. I use them on Stan's Alpha road rims with Stan's sealant.....is the Schwalbe Utremo in 700 x 28 specified as a tubeless tire? If not, don't use it tubeless. Road tubeless is different than mountain or even CX, where the pressures are much less. For road tubeless, it would be foolish to try and run a non-tubeless tire as tubeless, the beads of road tubeless tires are designed to remain air tight at road tire pressures. Non tubeless clincher road tires have beads that will stay on the rim at high pressure, obviously, but with an inner tube the bead is not required to remain air tight as it is in a tubeless application.

Ok, I guess that about answers that question. Lol.

Thanks for the reply.

The Schwalbe One has a tubeless 28 as well. It is much heavier than the Hutch.
