Convert odd hub body to single speed?

I recently got a big box of parts and a frame from a guy for free. I have almost all the parts I need to make a nice single speed road bike. One of the things he gave me were some "7s Suntour" hubs with an older 7 speed cassette (no ramps) laced to Araya rims. I removed the cassette and underneath was a hub body that I figured I could work with. But, when I tried to put this single speed cog on the hub, the hub body was too wide to accept the cog and spacers. The hub shell measures 36mm (see pics). I could put the cassette back on, but I'd prefer to shoot for a single speed in this case. Shifters cost money and I'd like to spend as little as possible on the bike and possibly sell it as a nice commuter to somebody without losing any money on the deal. Plus, the old Suntour cassette is in fantastic shape and I was thinking I could eBay it.

Any idea how I could go about putting a cog on this hub shell?

i would bust up the cassette (you did say you have one right?) and use whichever cog of those was best.

and i would use the spacers on the cassette and cobble up something to fill out the rest of the cassette carrier area on the freehub body. there should be some piece of plastic tubing around the house to do the job. or go the a real hardware store and, god forbid, buy something.

as a matter of fact, do me a favor, run it without spacers on the splines, just the cog. i've always wanted to try that out. tell me what happens....

Want a single speed?

Id just lose my attachment to that old cassette hub entirely, build up a freewheel hub wheel , and get rid of the multi speed dishing issues ..

with spoke bracing angles more = the wheel strength improves

axle spacer thickness will change sides les on left more on Right. and the whole hubshell center moves under the rim centerline

Even cheaper, leave the cassette intact but only use the cog that you want. That'll even work with vertical dropouts provided you leave the derailleur in place.
