old or new derailleur?

So if I have the old 7 speed MTB hub built up for my cross bike I'll need a rear derailleur for it. My question is, do I need an old derailleur, or would a new one work? I have a vintage Suntour thumb shifter and don't need index shifting. Will a new derailleur work with friction shifter? And if I need an old one - or just prefer one to save money - can anyone recommend a model and manufacturer?

Thanks again. DanO

pretty much any derailleur will work on a 7spd friction.
