De-gritting the right Ultegra shifter, but no luck.

I've had this Trek USPS 5500 with original components since either 1998 or 1999 I believe, and both the shifters have gotten so clogged up with grit that they won't shift anymore. Flooding them with WD-40 worked great for the left-shifter, and right-shifter can downshift pretty well, but not upshift worth a damn. I also noticed these two little washers apparently fell out of the right-shifter while dousing it with WD-40. Is something mechanically wrong with my right-shifter, and has anyone experienced little washers falling out of Ultegra shifters before? Picture below...

Thanks guys

I can't tell from the photo. Have you removed the lever module from the body? If so, are those washers the right diameter to fit the pivot pin? If yes, maybe they fit beween the lever and body and were stuck to the body until you freed them.

I wouldn't use WD-40 to flush SIS shifters. It's going to flush all the grease out of the mechanism along with the grit, and leave you with nada for lubrication once it evaporates. I'd go with TriFlow at the very least or maybe something like Slick-50 or perhaps Fluid Film that will leave something behind because those shifters don't work at all well dry.

Those might be from your brake/cable stop.
