chopped bars...now the brake doesn't work

ok...so i chopped my bars about an inch and three quarters...so i could do manuals a little better and for a little better control....welp....i didn't realize that the brake lever that i bought(Dia-Compe 77-DJ) can't work on the bend of the bars...i only use rear brakes so at least only one side doesn't work......any suggestions on if and how i could fix this....or any suggestions on which brake lever to buy.....if at all possible i want to use the one i got cuz i can't return it to DansComp cuz i already used it and i like the way it looks.....Thanks

explain why it wont work then maybe we can help you out, will it just not go onto the bend of your bars if thats the case then just try lossening the alen key bolt that tightens it onto your bars and then force it onto were you want it , try tapping it into place with a rubber mallet or somthing that wont damage your bars and then tighten it up.

dude, i have tried pushing it on but i didn't want to scratch it up cuz i just painted it....it won't fir onto the bend of the bars like where it goes down to the cross bar....i thought it would BUT NOP

FuzzyRyder 06-28-05 10:59 PM

try loosening the alen key bolt all the way and spreading the lever apart a bit with a secrew driver, then slide it on and tighten it up

There's absolutely no reason for why a Tech-77 won't work on the bend. People have been doing that for a long, long time with that lever and cut down Slam bars.

next time, pay attention to what you are cutting.

mude 06-29-05 09:38 AM

cut your grip a little and dont put it on the bend. DUH!

mude 06-29-05 09:39 AM

...or just dont worry about scratching your precious little handle bars. there gonna get scratched anyways if you mess up, so get it over with.

never mind, im probably not that lucky

DCdense 88 06-29-05 09:23 PM

the only reason that i cut them so little is because i didn't know what kind of lever i was going to buy i will deffinatly try to bend it open a little bit...ok...thanks

FuzzyRyder 06-29-05 10:48 PM

no problem

KinetikBiker 06-30-05 05:57 AM

Beerman is right, my Odyssey lever is on the bend of my Haro bars and it works fine...just slide the lever as far as it will go on, the tighten it, then cut the grip so that it will fit on the bars and leave the non-brake side grip as long as possble, so many people do this, its not hard and it works...and as far as the paint job, Mude is right, if you ride enough its going to get scratched...so get over it.

DCdense 88 06-30-05 08:55 PM

but if i cut the grip won't it make it like one grip is more to the side then the other...they won't be even...i don't even know if it would matter but it seems as though it would...i dunno...but thanks for the tips

CMcMahon 06-30-05 09:07 PM

Unless you have gorilla hands, your hand doesn't take up the entire grip, anyway. I cut about an inch off the end of my right grip, everytime I get a new one.

ok...cool...i'm gunna try it...tomorrow
