advice needed for newbie who needs bike
hi, i was wondering if i could get some advice on getting a bike. i haven't had a bike in over 10 years and am thinking of getting one. i'm really not into the whole mountain bike thing so i was thinking more along the lines of a BMX type bike. the issue i have is that i am 6'5'' tall. can anyone recommend anything for someone who knows very little about bikes? like type, size, cost, etc? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

If you get anything nowadays that costs over $350 you're doing pretty well and won't be breaking/upgrading right off the bat. If you're 6'5" and used to mountain bikes, might I suggest a Giant STP 2 or Kona Scrap? You're probably going to feel cramped and never quite at home even on a 21.5" BMX frame. I've seen some guys rip it up on cruisers, too, so you can go that route. Unless you're in it for flatland (and one dude I know about your size busts flat on a 24" cruiser), those bikes are going to be more comfortable and your learning curve will be easier, coming from an MTB background.

What are you planning on doing with your new bike? You can't do tricks on cruisers very easily, but they're certainly more comfortable for really big guys.

i'm not really even into doing tricks and stuff, i just want a bike i can ride with, and maybe jump some curbs and stuff, you know? something simple. i was just wondering like, if i went into a bike shop, what should i ask to see in a BMX style bike, as far as size, or type, or whatever. are there different sizes, whats the biggest kind there is, etc.

A 24" cruiser is probably the bike for you. Look for things like 4130 chromoly frame (full CrMo, not just the seat tube or down tube), and 3-piece cranks. You can ask any good bike shop for these things and they'll at least know what you're talking about. Good luck!

Specialized makes, or made a steel cruiser. Both mine are aluminum, which is nice for race bikes, but not the best choice for occassional beatings.

Hi! I'm a 5'4" girl looking for my first BMX bike. Preferably one that's light and street ready... I'd prefer to buy a complete bike... nothing too fancy. Any suggestions and tips?

saw one at the trails about a week ago...the guy had no trouble doing x-ups and tables and some old school kickouts...
plus you can add some other parts to it, (the guy had a tree sprocket and shadow seat etc.)

Yeah, flatland... It has to be light... I'm petite and I have to carry it up and down stairs, 'cause I use a train, more often than my car, for transportation. Any suggestions?

I can't believe all the little guys that claim to know everything are avoiding this thread. As far as Hoffman, I don't think they make a bad bike out of the bunch, so you can't go wrogn with anything under their label. I know more about racing, so I'm probably not the best source for advice on your style of riding. You probably don't want to see my photo either - I'm old.

There's another thread about flatland bikes running around here, check out www.flatlandfuel.com and take a look at the DK Signal. They're also selling a couple reasonably priced models from Eastern (Eastern Bikes Flatland model 3 and 4). If you're small, you might benefit from more compact geometry and the Ares FL450 might be a better choice. People 'round here are saying avoid KHE 'cause of the jankified internal detangler thing.
