Hey. Im soon going to be a member of the real biking community, not the 9 year olds with mongooses or some crap. I know I sound spoiled, but my mom is kind of inheriting some money, and she agreed to spend 1000 to 1500 dollars on a new bike. Im torn between BMX and mountain bikes. Im really sorry if this is in the wrong forum, if it is, ill give one of you mods the courtesy to move it. ;) So basicly, Im a slightly overwieght 13 year old who has never had a good bike. All my skill has been made on a low qualty bmx, and I can d basicly any kind of riding. I am into trials, but Im not going to get oriented into that too much. Personally, I think the BMXs are "cooler", but thats because Im pretty sure pro BMXers have alot more technical skill than pro mtbers. But whenever im riding, im regretting the hard ride and.. well... Thats pretty much it. But im on a super low quality bmx, (a mole dragon :mad: ) and I think i would be pleased with the 800 dollar bmx at the local full boar. Im not sure of the brand and crap, i only saw it once. But it has a rear V brake, big metal platform looking pedals, and it weighs freaking nothing. It feels good geometry wise. My other option, is a 2005 norco sasquatch. I dont think its an early 05 model, its a newer one, and has hayes sole hydraulic 8 inch discs, front and rear. It has sunrims singletracks, i think. They are sunrims though. Nice metal aftermarket brand pedals, and zocchi drop offs. I love it. I would get the medium size one. I think I will get the sasquatch, but if anyone has a hard opposing argument, I would like to hear it unless your going to be a horses dink pimple and say "omfg fukin BMx rulzor and muontin biks suck fukin **** on mountain bike omg fukzor." Or vise versa.But from what ive seen, the BMX crowd is more angry and protective of their sport. But prove me wrong, Im new. So give a helping hand, if i spend 1000 bucks on the wrong thing ill be pissed. ;)

Never heard of a norco. I would get a DK or eastern.

what kind of riding do you want to do? you want to learn tricks or race or what?

is the sasquatch a fixed gear? and I wouldn't get that bmx bike you saw, unless you are getting into racing because its definetly a race bike. if you like both BMX and Mtn bikes then maybe try somthing like the Haro Zero, the Brodie Heathen or the Norco Two50

dude thats cool of your mom to drop some cash on your prospective hobby...
but honestly you can find good used bmx frames at pedalbmx.com or bmxboard.com for half the price new. if you get a bmx you ought to built the sucker yourself... with some help from the bikeshop if need be. theyre simple bikes... and fun to ride... but dont invest too heavily incase you dont like it... sort of like dont put all the eggs in one basket... so if the bmx hobby tanks get the mt bike.
of course if you need a bike to get from A to B and are also looking for something to dick around on get the mt bike... without disk brakes unless you ride downhill (in my opinion)...

I've never heard of a norco sasquash so I dont think so.. and I dont see an over weight 13 year old riding a fixed gear bike.. If you are throwing down $1000 easy on a bike you dont want a Haro or a DK.. get a really nice frame, something from T1, FBM, S&M, Standard, Fit, Kink.... and build it up with nice parts. Definately do this if you are jumping or riding street or park. It really depends on what kind of riding you want to do on what kind of bike you get, but dont blow $1000. I've seen kinds get really crappy bikes for way too much money and other kids who have very little money but are smart and get awesome bikes. Nobody can really tell you what parts to get. Do a little research and use suggestions wisely.

It's a mountain bike, smart guys. And you can get much nicer for that much bread. Hayes Soles are bottom-rung hydraulics, for example, 'mini' single piston with one fixed pad. You're better off with some nice mechanical disc brakes. I would do some shopping around, lurking and asking specific questions before you dump 1500 bucks without knowing what you're getting into.

Hey, im not that fat. ;) And I forgot to mention that I have 3 years motocross under my belt, im in the 125 class now. And I took some consideration into this, and I decided to get the sasquatch. Ill post a link to it. I live in kamloops bc, too. And I have looked very hard at all the tidbits of info I can find, and I am pleased with what the compontets have to offer. With that amount of $ any bike you find will be nice.
It really comes down to gears or not. If you plan on doing any distance riding you better have some gears.

Seems you've decided on a MTB, find the one that has the frame you like the best, parts will fail and you can upgrade as they do.
Unfortunately, given your age, you will outgrow a MTB frame in a few years.

Try to ride several bikes and make notes...although frames have similar geometry, stem/handle bar sizes can make a bike handle better for YOU.

Oh yea, NORCO has been around a long time, I've never seen one in person because I think it's a Canadian builder, but their bikes seem equal to most name brand American bike companies.

For that kind of cash, you should be able to get a jump bike MTB, like an STP, and still have plenty of coin left over for a decent BMX. Going full custom on a BMX would be a waste of money for someone that can't even remember the name of the bike he saw in a shop. Custom bikes are for riders that know exactly what they want and need from each component.

Either way, I hope you get the bike you want, and that you have fun with it. Much respect to your mum for getting you a bike, and not a new Playstation.

I would personally get a moutain bike........get a Specialized p3 or p2........then you can ride dirt with it and still like lose weight at the same time..........yay

Do you plan on racing, or just goofin around town? If your' going to race, talk to guys that race at your local bike shop, and build a relationship with them and the bike shop. You will be going back often for parts. They probably have some support at a local track or local club. Ask them what they recommend for you money, ability and goals.

this will get you around, on the street, and on the trails. you can jump, do some tricks, and most important of all beat the heck out of it.

Well, Im not planning on going full out racer, but I may go to sunpeaks for the downhill courses.I would love a specailized P3, but 1700 bucks.. To much. I wont grow out of it soon, the medium frame is large but I can handle it. Like my dirtbike, its a fullsize. Most of it is just riding everything downtown and looking good to ;). Ill go to the bike shop later and look at the other options just in case, though. And about the mechanical discs, I dont like the feel of mechanicals. No give, the hydros are smooth. Thanks for your opinions. And about the Kona Stuff, there are no local Kona dealers that I can get to.

**** dude if u want a good bike that is bmx make a custom one at a local bikeshop that only deals with bmx dont buy a stock bike in the long run ur custom bike well be the best out there because with a stock bike u may have a lot of problems down the line thats wut i have heard
