Practice the balancing part before you roll into it and before you roll out of it. Once you get to where you can balance up there for a long time practice setting your peddels and putting your foot on the frame by the seattube. Then as you step to the peddels turn the bars back the way they are supposed to be. Once you get rolling out of it, practice the hardest part of the trick which is rolling in. Stand left foot on left front peg and right foot on left peddel, Then turn the bars. Dont turn them so fast that you go more than 90 degrees but dont turn them to slow either, the trick is realy easy to learn to do so just keep practicing it.

I dont know what you are talking about mott, but i think he's talking about a track stand, which comes from track bikes, like just balancing standing on your bike before a race. I dont know what all that with your feet on the pedals is for. I think your talking about a flatland trick, maybe like a frame stand or something, but maybe so is mikay and I'm very wrong.. but if you are trying a trackstand as i know one you should turn your bars toward your forward foot and lean your weight over your front end.. and practice. everytime you stop at a read light if you are just riding around, try it. try it over and over.

try doing it on a track bike, so your higher off the ground and your feet are clipped in and in the middle of traffic. It sucks messing them up. Just keep trying, you'll get them. If the gate is there, I'm sure you can lean up against that. I'm sure a racer on the forums would know better than me.

Here's how a trackstand works on a fixed gear track bike:
Standing on the bike, roll to a stop with pedals at 9:00 and 3:00 with your dominant foot forward. Turn your bars toward the leading foot about 45 degrees. Body weight should be centered over both wheels. Assuming you're right-footed, if you start to fall to the right, pedal forward just a tiny bit. This brings the bike back under you ('cause you're turning right). If you start to fall to the left, pedal backward and bring the bike back under you that way.
Obviously you can't do the 'pedal backward' part without a fixed gear. But you can *roll* backward just enough to keep your balance if you point your bike up a mild slope. Practice the hell out of it this way and soon you'll be comfortable balancing on *no* slope with a freewheeled bike. Practice variations. Seated trackstands. No-handed trackstands. Talking on cell phone eating a bagel at a stoplight trackstands (no sh*t, a guy I work with does these...clipped in...on a road bike). Take it to the starting gate and be the trackstand king.

Ok, one of the guys I race against was an Aussie trials motorcycle champ, and I learned a helpful tip from him. Don't waste valuable daytime practicing balance. After dinner, he'd turn the TV and watch his favorite shows while balancing on his bike in his lounge room. There you have it.
