the term freestyle came around in the 1980's and ment doing stunts on a bmx style bike.
these stunts included ramps and ground riding.
as the "sport" evolved ground riding got more complex (as well as dirt jumping, ramps, street etc)
flatland is doing stunts on flat ground
freestyle can mean doing stunts on anything but usually if it's street you just say street or if it's dirt you just say dirt.

Flatland is a form of freestyle riding in general. I say this because every rider has thier own way of doing things. Whether it's street, or on a tennis court. Everyrider is FREE to develope his/her own STYLE. Thus the term FREESTYLE

if i remember correcctly... during the old a$$ AFA (american freestyle association) which i was a member of,,,, at the comps you either did flatland or ramps,,, but now you have street,,which a lot of guys didnt like,, because they were generally abusive of other ppl's property.. flatland just abusive to your own and the ground,, and ramps,, (if you could find one,, was abusive to the noise level of that neighborhood.... but again im speaking from 15 years ago...... but flatland was basically it tricks performed on flatland...... almost like saying freestyle is nissan while flatland is a maxima,, . they are all the same just different categories
