pegs for 1/2" axle?
Hey I just picked up an old Haro, I measure the axles at 1/2" diameter. New pegs seem to all be made for 3/8" or 14mm axles. Any idea where I can find some pegs that will fit the 1/2"? Or another solution?
I see some pegs are tapered... would that allow me to use a larger-diameter peg and just snug the nut against the tapered part? Or is that a bad idea? Or am I missing the point entirely? (I did search first BTW...) Thanks! |
I would recommend doing one of the following:
Buy 14mm pegs, and make a tubular spacer to fit between the axle slot in the peg and the axle. I've done this with an old 14mm Primo Stogie, a cut down 10mm-14mm axle spacer and a 10mm (3/8") Vandero axle before, and it worked fine while I was learning predator grinds. Or you could buy 3/8" pegs, and drill them smoothly with a 9/16" bit. Don't use a 1/2" bit, because it will be too close for comfort, and you'll end up filing away the inside anyway. I've also done this with a separate pair of Primo Stogies, and it worked fine. If you do this method, be sure to buy carbide bits. |
thanks Beerman.
One thing though, isn't 9/16ths like 14.3mm? If that works, why not just use a 14mm-hole peg? 1/2" is about 12.7mm. |
9/16" is 14mm, now that I think about it. Just find a 13mm bit or something, then.

13mm = 1/2". Shouldn't be too hard to work something out.
|
Are you sure about that? If 3/8" is 10mm, and 14mm is 9/16" (or maybe it was 5/8"), then 1/2" should be closer to 12mm...

You ever owned a VW? 13mm or 1/2", you can use either wrench or socket.

Are you talking about those old haro wheels that have the ""internal axle"" things?
(Like the newer Profile hubs but with a socket drive instead of an allen to tighten and loosen) |

(Like the newer Profile hubs but with a socket drive instead of an allen to tighten and loosen) Sorry about all the confusion guys.. but I think my numbers are right, 1/2" is approx. 12.7mm ... so 13mm would probably fit. Anyway I poked around some old used bikes and found another one with a 1/2" setup, bought the pegs off that. That's fine for now. If I switch up at a later time, I guess I'll drill out w/ a 1/2" bit and then file, because I don't know how much "wiggle room" is necessary. If anyone else wants to try a 13mm bit and let us know if it's too big, that would be cool. Thanks again |
Mmmm Kay...whatever.
